Legislative Alert

As you are aware, the Illinois Self Storage Association (ISSA) has been standing in the gap for its members on stopping the passage of a service tax on the self storage industry. With limited legislative advocacy resources, we have made our position quite clear on why self storage leasing should not be taxed. Our arguments focus on the following facts:
* Self storage does not provide “service;” it leases real property.
* Self storage facilities already pay property tax and adding service tax to real property is double taxation.
* Other real property venues (apartments, store fronts, etc) are not taxed for their leasing of real property.
* A large percentage of tenants using self storage are either in transition due to job change, foreclosure or military and typically are lower in a lower income range.

Use the attached letter to send to your State Senator and Legislator. Click here

NEW Legal Information Services

The Illinois Self Storage Association now has in place a new legal information service. Noted industry attorney Jeff Greenberger has offered his expertise in self storage law through a member benefit program.

Members can now subscribe to a legal information service that provides you two 10 minute live converstations per month with Jeff Greenberger on legal issues impacting your operation. This $900.00 value service is available for a annual member subscriptin of $150.00. Call the ISSA office for more details.

A Webinar is a seminar conducted over the Internet, a type of online conference. Unlike a Webcast, which transmits information in only one direction, a Webinar is designed to be interactive between the presenters and audience. It is "live" in the sense that information is conveyed according to an agenda, with a starting and ending time. In most cases, the presenter may speak over a standard telephone line, pointing out information being presented on the viewers' computer screen. The audience can ask questions of the presenter by typing messages to the presenters via an online chat tool.

The ISSA office on the advise of legal counsel no longer offers a "standard" lease agreement. Because of changes in local laws, state legislation and court rulings, it is the recommendation of ISSA that any lease agreement be drafted by an attorney experienced in self storage law.
